Everett L. Dargan Scholarship Fund

Everett Dargan    On Thursday June 16, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine will host a dinner honoring a pioneer and hero-Dr. Everett Dargan, Clinical Professor of Surgery. Dr. Dargan is a preeminent thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who, through his medical skill, has saved hundreds, if not thousands of lives. As a role model and educator, he has inspired an entire generation of physicians and health care professionals.

Everett Dargan pursued an education in medicine at a time in history when that was perhaps the occupation least available to a person of color. More than that, he dreamed of returning to the South, the land of his birth, but also a place strictly divided by race. His initial return emphasized the need for further education because he was not equally accepted by the medical community. This resulted in his training in General and Cardiothoracic Surgery that has made him preeminent in his field.

Today when people talk about Everett Dargan, they speak of the physician, the surgeon, the educator, the leader, the pioneer. These are the reasons why he is an excellent role model for students and young physicians from every walk of life; why the USC School of Medicine's efforts to establish a scholarship in his name to recruit, educate, and retain under-represented minority physicians is such a worthwhile endeavor.

If you would like to attend the June 16 dinner, become a sponsor, or contribute to the Everett L. Dargan Scholarship Fund, please contact Carol McMahon, Assistant Dean for Minority Affairs, USC School of Medicine at 733-1516.
